There are two types of people in this world: Those who will clap for you no matter what, and those who will eventually block you because your success pisses them off.
And yes, your content is devoured by both.
That is... until they block you lol.
Which is kinda why I think social media metrics (specifically views + engagement) are the worst thing you can measure.
Because I know damn well one third of the people watching my content are doing it out of spite, another third are genuinely impressed and want to support me...but neither of those two segments are actually leads.
Then there's the last third...and that's the segment that really truly counts.
And while they might be watching, there's a very good chance they're not engaging.
Most of my BIG clients? Hired me because of my Instagram content. But never once gave me a double tap or a comment. Hell, I don't even think some of them were following me!
Soooo all that's to say, while I'm a data girlie through and through...I believe your social analytics are almost pointless to obsess over.
I'd actually argue that obsessing over your social metrics might actually hurt you more than help you.
There. I said it.
I went on a little rant about this over on Instagram Stories earlier this week while pulling monthly data for my VIP Social Strategy & Content Support clients.
My point was this: There's a huge difference between "knowing" your data and actually knowing how to interpret that data.
Which is why I share analytic reports with my clients in a very specific way. Because the data I look at to make informed decisions around content isn't necessarily data that will make sense when my clients see it.
For example, if you see a whole lot of this 📉📉📉 on a report. Obviouslyyy, you're gonna have a mild panic attack that "we're doing something wrong and omg we have to change something!!!"
But the unseen part is that last month we had a mega viral post, and so now our metrics are just coming back to baseline after an outlier event.
Or on the flip side, a client will see this 📈📈📈 and think "omgg!! this post is workingggggg we have to create more just like it!!!"
But the unseen part is that while it popped off in the algorithm, it actually just hit a weird corner of the internet that has NOTHING to do with their actual business. So big yay for getting views, but those views were from an audience segment that will never buy from you.
Sooo, not exactly a yay at the end of the day. Even though Instagram would really love for you to believe that.
The metrics that count? The metrics that actually move the needle in your business.
Likeeeee:
- How many clicks to your website is your content generating?
- How many DMs are you getting from potential leads who read something that resonated with them?
- How often are people inquiring about your services, coming to your store, or purchasing your products as a direct result of the content you're producing?
And no, those metrics don't often occur instantly.
Trust takes time to build. That's why the ✨minimum✨ contract period I'll allow a new client to sign is three months. Because in three months, that's just the START of traction building if you're consistently producing brand-led content.
But then soon enough, you'll be sending me emails like this in disbelief that social content that YOU created is actually (FINALLY) converting for you after years of throwing sh*t at the wall, hoping it works.
I want that moment of "holy crap, it's working!!!" for you too.
So if you're ready to get started, hit reply to inquire about my Social Strategy & Content Support package.
