☕️ “lol wtf is wrong with you”

My best friend said something in her MOH speech that I can’t stop thinking about, and it honestly comes full circle and will directly influence how you’re showing up online, so stay with me here.

For context, we’ve been friends since the second grade, when we met in 2002.

Meaning she’s been by my side through it allllll.

The scrapbooking phase. The emo kid phase. The scene kid phase - or as she called it - the neon phase. The ‘make her record videos with me and post them on the internet’ phase. The mental health clothing line phase.

All of it.

In her speech, after pointing out just how many variations of Marissa she witnessed over the last 24 years, she said her favorite Marissa is the current Marissa… happy Marissa.

And I couldn’t stop thinking about that sentence because it was mirrored back to me all night.

I really am the happiest I’ve ever been…because it’s the first time in my life where I’m able to be 100% myself. No masking. No shielding. No chameleoning.

Meeting my husband (hehe, first time typing that) definitely played a huge part in that.

Because until we met, I always thought I had to dilute myself or round out the sharp edges because of how many people over the years basically said, ‘lol wtf is wrong with you.’

But with him, the masks are down.

And because of that, you’ve been seeing a lot more of the real Marissa in my content over the last 3 years.

Which is funnnyyy because guess when my business really took tf off?

When I fully sent being ME online.

All the brain chaos. All the f*cks. All the soundtracks that scare some of y'all.

Basically, all the parts of myself I was nervous to be judged for have now become the things where people are just like ‘lol, yup that’s just Marissa’

And it’s been f*cking awesome bc my people are able to easily find me in the crowded room we call IG.

So, bringing this right back to you - hear me loud and clear when I say I spent a solid 20+ years of my life being a chameleon and changing what I look and sound like to better fit into my surroundings. And I know there’s a very good chance you’re doing that too.

I know you think it’s serving you. I know you think refinement is needed for professionalism. I know you think you might be a bit too much for some people.

And you’re so f*cking right. You will be too much for some people.

But those aren’t your gahhhdamn people.

If you want your brand and your content to truly attract BEST fit clients to your business, you need to take the mask off and show the world who the f*ck you really are.

You WANT to make some people say ‘wtf is wrong with you.’

I talk more about that in this post (10/10 recommend giving it a read).

But you can also think about it this way - we’ve entered a space in time where everyone is diluting themselves for the sake of efficiency (looking at you, AI), so even if they aren’t masking or being a chameleon, they’re still blending in.

Which means it's easier than ever to stand out… but to do that effectively, you need to know who tf you are.

Then let it f*cking rip.

Catch ya next week,

Marissa

If right now you feel like you’re constantly publishing content… but it’s not quite doing what you want it to do for your business. At least not in any measurable or meaningful way - I’m willing to bet you’ve said to yourself at some point, “what’s the f*cking point.” Because so many founders start to go through the motions of content creation and get stuck in execution for execution’s sake, without ever stopping to ask: “Is this content actually leading somewhere, or am I spinning myself in...

How many times have you tried to walk the dog *quickly* because you're running late, but your dog basically looks back at you like, "yeah...nice try buddy," and keeps sniffing, slowly trying to find the best place to drop a deuce? Your timeline is irrelevant here. What you want doesn't matter because your dog has to do what he has to do, and you quite literally can't rush sh*t. That's basically the same thing that happens when you post content expecting your audience to react immediately....

What do you do when you love something? You yap about it. That's honestly the whole secret to creating content that doesn't feel like nails on a chalkboard. The more excited you are about what you're doing, the easier it is to talk about. The more human it becomes, the better it performs. But unfortunately, most people get tripped up before they even get there. Because either they're so focused on "doing content right" that they lose their actual message in the process. Or they're busy...
